125 Years Ago: From the Aug. 30, 1901 Shakopee Tribune

The fire department was given a long run Saturday morning, when an alarm was sent in by phone from Heller’s brewery. Sparks from a locomotive had set fire to a stubble field, and threatened for a time several stacks of grain; but a force of men with wet grain sacks had the fire under control before the apparatus was on the ground. A couple of acres of stubble were burned bare.

Valleyfair plans million dollar expansion

Developers of Valleyfair Entertainment Center in Shakopee today announced plans for a one million dollar expansion program for Its 1977 operating season.

David C. Sherman, president of Valley Park Inc., the Minnesota corporation developing the themed amusement center, said the expansion calls for the addition of rides, additional shows and more entertainment throughout the park.

He said plans have not yet been completely formulated but, in addition to rides and shows, continued emphasis will be placed on even more extensive landscaping, flower sections and “old time” turn-of-the-century theming aspects which have been so well received by guests in the first season…

Last Tuesday street overseer Sarasen and a crew of men broke ground for the power house of the electric lighting plant which is to be installed here before winter. The building will be of red brick, 34×60 feet in size and one story high. Hameyer and Kreuser have the contract.

Wednesday morning a team hitched to a load of lime which was being loaded into a car west of the depot took fright and ran away, scattering the lime and other bric-a-brac along their course. One of the horses brought up on the sidewalk on First street near C. E. Busse’s, and both were captured uninjured later. The team belonged to the Shakopee Cement Lime Mfg. company.

Council Adopts 3.2 Liquor Ordinance

Adoption of an ordinance affecting windows and doors in places licensed to sell liquor and 3.2 beer; discussion of a building permit involving the Rahr Malting Company and the Socony Vacuum Oil company; and consideration of installing parking meters, constituted the major business before the city council Tuesday night.

After unanimously adopting a resolution prohibiting the use of excavating machines in digging within 4 ft. of water and sewer lines in city streets, the council placed Ordinance No. 105 on its first reading.

The ordinance, amending No. 104 and supplanting another ordinance recently vetoed by Mayor Czaia, provides that all exterior windows and doors of establishments licensed to sell liquor or 3.2 beer shall afford a clear an unobstructed view of the interior, and prohibits the drawing of shades, blinds or curtains above the height of five feet above sidewalk level…

Construction Of New Rahr Malt House Forges Ahead

Work is moving ahead rapidly on the new malt house being constructed just west of the present Rahr plant. The building, under construction by the McKenzie‑Hague‑Simons Co. of Minneapolis, will double the malting capacity at the local plant. It will be virtually a twin of the present plant, built in 1937, except for some modifications in the interior malting equipment. Over 100 men are on the job daily…

The sidewalk crossings on the Omaha tracks east of Lewis street have been neatly planked, the four inch timbers used bringing the walk up flush with the rails. Shakopee Ave. Recommended for Route of New Road

The joint committee representing the Commercial club and city council viewed the proposed routes of the Shakopee-Spring Lake road at the point where this road enters Shakopee last Friday.

After completing the survey the committee decided to recommend to the county board at its next meeting, that the road be routed on Shakopee avenue to Holmes street, making a wide turn on the McGrade estate onto Shakopee avenue. This route will also require the construction of a wide turn at the L. H. Henrionette corner entering Holmes street.

Last Tuesday Wm. Thiede sold his stock of confectionery and toys to Mike Berens, who will take charge as soon as an invoice has been taken. Mr. Berens disposed of his goods to Mr. Thiede less than five months ago and went to Salem, Ill., to live, but since that time neither he nor his wife have been well, and therefore decided to return. Mr. Thiede was not desirous of selling out but could not resist the offer made by Mr. Berens. He will look up a location in some other town and engage in the same line of business.

125 Years Ago: From the Aug. 2, 1901 Shakopee Tribune

Last Friday work was begun by Fischer & Peterson on the new piazza which is to replace the old plank porch and steps along the entire front of the Court House. The unsightly wooden structure has been removed, and in its place will be built a piazza with brick walls, a cement floor, and a railing around the whole except at the center, or front door, where a twelve foot stairway of cement will lead up from the cement walk. The improvement will be remarkable, and of enduring shape. The brick walls are already up, and present a neat architectural appearance with paneled rectangles marked off by columns in relief, the latter being of pressed brick. The five foot deep space between the walls and the building will be filled in with dirt, and on this filling will be laid the cement floor.

Library, police station atop city building plans

The Shakopee City Council intends to place a new public library atop its construction list starting next spring with a police station to follow at about the same time.

The City Council is planning to begin construction of a library in the spring of 2002 on the current library site. The city is eyeing a vacant parcel on Gorman Street, behind Citizens State Bank, as the new home for a police station and city hall. Work on a new city hall is planned for 2006, according to City Administrator Mark McNeill…
