125 Years Ago: From the Sept. 12, 1901 Scott County Argus

The Omaha railway company has sent its check for $10 to the Shakopee fire department for its services at the time of the fire near Heller’s brewery, when several stacks of grain were threatened. The fire was out of the city limits, but the department answered the call and arrived at the place shortly after the fire was got under control.

100 Years Ago: From the Sept. 16, 1926 Shakopee Argus-Tribune

John Nelson, the laborer who was so badly injured in July while working with a road crew across the river on Highway No. 5, is making good progress toward recovery at Shakopee hospital. Mr. Nelson, who is 64 years old, sustained sixteen fractures, and only his splendid constitution and excellent care enabled him to withstand the shock and pain of his injuries. He is now able to sit up and his progress is considered remarkable owing to the nature of his hurts and his advanced years.

Council To Plan Garage Building

A municipal garage, large enough to house all of the city’s utility, street and fire vehicles and motor equipment became a possibility Tuesday night when the city council instructed the building and city property committee to consider plans and get estimates on construction costs.

The action was taken following receipt of notice from A. J. Stang that, effective in October, the rental fee on a garage now used by the city would be valued at $75 per month. The rental is currently $60 monthly…

Children’s Home To Open At Women’s Reformatory

Facilities at the State Women’s Reformatory will be used as a Home For Children starting September 10, Miss Clara Thune, superintendent, revealed this week.

The new state institution will have no connection with the reformatory but merely use extra available facilities. It will operate with a new staff, although Miss Thune, as reformatory superintendent will also have charge of the Children’s Home. Children at the Home will be mentally retarded girls between the ages of 4 and 12 years.

Use of Shaw cottage on the reformatory grounds for this purpose was authorized by legislative act at the 1951 session. At the same time, the legislature appropriated money for the remodeling of Shaw cottage to house the children…

Sirens inspiring complaints

Due to numerous complaints about the new fire sirens, the Shakopee Fire Department will be utilizing these two new fire sirens as a stand-by system.

The new fire sirens will only be sounded when the fire Chief determines that not enough firemen responded to a particular fire or emergency.

This does not affect the Civil Defense system and the Civil Defense sirens will sound whenever the need arises.

Schools to seek levy vote

Extension for class sizes, school operations

Shakopee School Board members on Monday agreed to ask local voters to approve an operating levy to help fund operation of the city’s fourth grade school, as well as maintain lower class sizes and build up the district’s general fund reserve.

Area residents will head to the polls Nov. 6 to decide whether to replace the final year of a $3.3 million excess levy with a new levy that will extend six years. The existing levy, approved by district taxpayers in 1997, is set to expire in 2003 – less than a year after the new elementary building opens. While the board has socked away a chunk of the $500,000 that will be required to run the school, additional funding is urgently needed, said Superintendent Jon MeBroom…
